Visa information
General Eligibility Requirements
- For Short Term Stay Visa: Interns normally enter Japan on a “Short-Term Stay / Temporary Visitor” status that covers tourism, business meetings, short training, or unpaid internships.
- Purpose: The stay must not involve paid employment; activities are limited to tourism, business visits, cultural experiences, or other non-remunerated programs.
- Duration: For most nationalities, the permitted stay is up to 90 days, with the total allowed period depending on your passport and entry stamp.
Visa Application Process
- Initial Application: Depending on your nationality, you may either apply for a Short-Term Stay visa at a Japanese embassy/consulate before travelling, or enter visa-free as a Temporary Visitor if your country is on Japan’s visa-waiver list.
- Extension: Extensions are generally limited and must be requested at a regional immigration office in Japan. Approval is at the discretion of the Immigration Services Agency, and supporting documents (reason for extension, proof of funds, onward plans, etc.) are required.
Visa Costs and Duration
- Cost: Consular fees differ by nationality and can change, so applicants must check the latest schedule on the website of the Japanese embassy or consulate responsible for their country.
- Duration: Short-term entries are usually granted for up to 90 days at a time; some visitors may receive a shorter stay depending on nationality and immigration officer discretion.
Specific Requirements for Applicants
- Eligible for Extension: Under current Japanese immigration rules, citizens of Austria, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Mexico, Switzerland and the United Kingdom may be able to apply for a one-time extension of their 90-day Temporary Visitor stay up to a maximum of 180 days in total, subject to immigration approval.
Visa Restrictions
- Activities: Short-Term Stay status permits voluntary, unpaid internships and cultural or educational activities only. Any form of paid work or income-earning activity is not allowed under this visa.
Atlas Assistance
- Support: Atlas can provide general guidance on typical visa pathways for interns in Japan and issue program documents (such as internship confirmation letters) to support your application. However, all visa decisions are made solely by Japanese embassies, consulates and immigration offices, so applicants must always follow the official instructions provided by those authorities.
