Chiang Mai Overview

In the mountainous north of Thailand lies Chiang Mai, sometimes written Chiengmai and often translated as “New City”, the capital of Chiang Mai Province and one of the three largest urban centres in the country.

Set along the Ping River, a major tributary of the Chao Phraya River, Chiang Mai has fewer than one million residents and functions as northern Thailand’s key economic, cultural, educational, and religious hub.

Phuket City is located in the southeastern part of the island, has a population of about 400,000 people, and serves as one of Thailand’s key seaports and commercial hubs.
